Practice Being Human, Together

A team of 5 doodle people, each with a different superpower.

The Party is Your Chosen Team

We're a ragtag team of tech professionals on a quest to rebuild the things that made work human - connection, play, and growth - through a community of care that shows up for each other.

Join the Party!

Party : (noun) a chosen team, each on their own path, traveling together, learning, stumbling, supporting each other, and celebrating the journey, side by side.

Work used to feel better

A doodle person sits on windowsill looking on dreamily

Facts.Largely because companies stopped nurturing a community of care.Teams are isolated, stunted, or burned out.
Work feels lonely or unnecessarily competitive.
Play is gone.
It doesn't have to be this way.The Party is how we rebuild what made work great:

  • People who care about and support each other

  • Space to grow through experimentation and play

  • Room for joy, grief, awkwardness...you know, life!

Why We Play

Ain't just for kids. For big kids, too!

Play is how we humans explore, connect, and develop. And in The Party, we use games and game inspired experiences to practice the stuff no one teaches:

  • how to speak up

  • how to listen

  • how to disagree with kindness

  • how to hold uncertainty

  • how to lead with heart

  • how to "do human thing"

These are "soft skills," which some might argue are the hardest skills of all to learn because how do you practice leading with heart? 😆

Playing games and make believe? 😏 Actually yeah! When learning feels like play, something shifts...We drop our guard, try new things, laugh. We connect. You won't find point systems or leaderboards in The Party. But you will find collaborative storytelling, roleplaying games, and experiments.Play is how we build the kind of trust a community like this needs, while developing skills, like emotional intelligence, that carry over into your next meeting, career step, or even relationship. In a world that makes everything about productivity, play reminds us we're human. It gives us room to imagine better ways of working, growing, and supporting each other. It's how we build a peaceful, more joyful future for ourselves. If you're burned out, feeling isolated, or missing the magic of growing with people who care, come play with us!

How it works

Every month, we explore a core theme that sits at the intersection of working in tech and being human, things like institutional trauma, boundaries, rest as resistance, or even love.We discuss how themes show up in our lives through:

  1. Large and small group convos that help you reflect and feel less alone

  2. Games and experiments where you can develop related soft skills, embracing awkwardness

  3. Perspectives from members and guest speakers who’ve been there

You’ll start noticing new things about how you show up at work and in life.We comfort each other, of course, because these can be difficult topics, but we also learn new ways of thinking. It's not about mastery, but about noticing, trying, feeling, and learning. All of this is in a weird, fun, and gentle wrapper (see what I did there?)* held up by kindness and open-mindedness.

What you'll find inside

*This is the level of humor you can expect from me 😅

"The Party is a workplace community for those that don't have one. Lissy is attempting to create the kind of space where people can grow, focusing on personal journey instead of productivity metrics and performance standards. I'm excited to play!"

A letter from the gamemaster

👋 Hi, I'm Lissy - professional human, lifelong gamer, and the person behind HuMindWise and The Party. For the past decade or so, I've been designing soft skill games for teens, guiding product teams through challenges and change, and exploring how adults grow when they're invited to play again.Them's the credentials, but I honestly started The Party because I missed the feeling of being on a great team. The type of team:

  • Where people have your back

  • Where the jokes are weird because the trust is deep

  • Where growth feels like a shared adventure

  • Where people ask the hard questions, stay after the call, and make you feel like part of something

That's the energy I want to create. The emotional infrastructure that made great teams possible is now gone. Companies got greedy. Team building disappeared. Most workplaces aren't built for that anymore. That culture of care is pretty much dead.So I decided to revive it. Instead of waiting for things to get better, I'm gathering amazing people I loved working with - and the ones I just hadn't met yet - into a space where we can show up for each other and support each other the way we wish our companies still nurtured.Through games, conversations, experiments, and shared practice, The Party is all about building the skills and the community that make work and life more human. Come practice being human with us!

"The gulf between my work and any sense of community is one of the reasons I left tech. I think Lissy is so cool for imagining a different way for folks to connect and reconsider how they relate to one another in an environment that most folks think has no room for people to actually be people."

Fresh Out of FAQs? I have plenty!

What is The Party, exactly?

Think of it as a third space away from work and home where you can be yourself, bond over shared experiences, and grow through games.

The Party is open to folks from all walks of life. The only requirement is that you work in a tech or tech-adjacent role, are respectful, and agree to the code of conduct.

Do I need to be into games to join?

Playing games is cool! But nope! You only need a willingness to be playful. We'll help you learn everything else.

What things happen in The Party?

We show up in many different ways for each other. Coworking, light and deep conversations, game days, optional match ups, mutual aid, gaming streams, digital and in person events are some of the things you can expect. Participate in the ways that bring you joy.

What do you mean by "soft skills?"

Soft skills are superpowers for protecting your peace and creating joy at work. Some of the most common ones are empathy, communication, and teamwork. The Party is a playful space for everyone to experiment and try new things in an environment where it's safe to play around and grow those soft skill muscles.

Will this be a paid community?

Yessiree! The Party is not just another Discord or Slack. Paid memberships support me, Lissy, in growing and nurturing this community at a part-time pace, through my emotional, mental, and physical labor. This includes:

  • designing experiences, hosting/planning/facilitating events, tending the culture, and supporting members; all things that take skill, care, and time.

  • using a safer, private platform called Heartbeat with stronger privacy protections than open social apps.

  • allowing us to offer sliding scale pricing in the future, scholarships, and free spots.

  • filtering in folks who are intentional about community. Even a small cost creates just enough commitment to attract folks who really want to be here and support each other.

Right now, The Party is in alpha, which means early members get a lower cost in exchange for cocreating, experimenting, and helping shape what comes next. Long-term, the plan is to keep yearly membership affordable, like the price of a conference ticket.

If you’re in tech and feeling stuck, stressed, or like you’re shouting into the void at work, this is for you. Designers, developers, PMs, any tech or tech adjacent role is welcome here.Being a non-binary Latine woman, I am familiar with some of the trauma and struggles of being part of a minority group in tech. For those requesting chat services, session time is doubled. Please contact me directly for booking.

After signing a short, plain language contract and submitting an intake form, we meet for our session where you set the agenda. We can talk through a recent challenge at work, prep for something coming up (like a presentation or tough conversation), or work on a specific skill.I believe that everyone is an expert in themselves. I pull from my experience as a tutor, researcher, and teacher, which means I’m skilled at listening closely, asking the right questions, and offering guiding strategies. Game roots

Hey folks! I’m Lissy, lifelong gamer, UX designer, and founder of HuMindWise. For over a decade, I've worked in tech, blending my love for play and design to create meaningful experiences. My journey with serious games began in college, where I designed games for inner city youth to develop soft skills naturally through play. This passion led me to Michigan State, where I earned a master’s in Human-Computer Interaction along with a certificate in Serious Games. After college, I was one of only two designers in my first job, and I had to learn on the fly how to persuade stakeholders, craft compelling stories, and advocate for my ideas, all while maintaining my sanity, my relationships, and my job. I had to create my own professional growth with little guidance, which created opportunity for me to figure out how to grow.

    The missing piece

Beyond my first job, I worked on all sorts of teams - teams of one, embedded teams, central teams, chaos teams! Over the years, I learned that, for me and for many others, the tech world can be isolating, stressful, and overwhelming. Somewhere along the way, the focus on developing soft skills disappeared. These are foundational skills that we don't often find in schools, that require practice to master, and we can use to create more peace and joy in our work lives. Here’s the catch: developing these skills takes practice, psychological safety, and real social interaction, things that tech rarely makes space for these days.

    Why I created HuMindWise

In 2024, after being laid off and facing my own burnout, I considered leaving tech for good. But conversations with friends, about their stories, their struggles, their exhaustion, pulled me back in with a new sense of purpose.I realized I couldn’t fix the corporate world overnight. But! I could create a space where we support each other, continue building on the skills we need, and make work feel human again. That’s where HuMindWise comes in.

    What we're building together

    - A support system for navigating growth, self-doubt, and work challenges- A place where you can experiment, grow, and develop soft skills without the fear of failure.- A community powered by play, where professional growth feels more like an adventure than checking corporate boxes.

Doodle of two hands gripped together

Play has always been my greatest teacher. From video games to board games to tabletop role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, games have taught me about connection, collaboration, and being human. Now, I’m bringing those same principles into tech careers to help others turn their struggles into opportunities for joy and learning. So welcome to the campaign, the one where we build the support system we wish we had!

    Code of Conduct

A community built on play, growth, and respect

At HuMindWise, we’re here to grow, experiment, and support each other in becoming better professionals and better humans. This is a space where learning happens through play, where we practice soft skills without fear of failure, and where we build meaningful relationships.Being here (using this site, participating in events or the community, and so on) means agreeing to co-create a space that is inclusive, energizing, and supportive. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about curiosity, accountability, and respect. Here’s how we make that happen together:

We respect each other as human beings

Every person here brings unique experiences, perspectives, and strengths. We welcome that diversity, and we create space for everyone to feel heard and valued.

    We commit to:

    • Treating each other with kindness and dignity

    • Engaging in curious, open-minded conversations

    • Giving each other grace to learn and grow

    We don't do:

    • Harmful language, harassment, or discrimination (including but not limited to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, religious discrimination)

    • Personal attacks, bullying, or intimidation

    • Behavior that makes others feel unwelcome or unsafe

What happens if someone crosses the line?

If someone engages in harmful behavior, they will be removed from the community, events, courses, workshops, and coaching sessions without a refund. This is a space for growth, not harm, and that means prioritizing the well-being of our members.

    Authentic expression and language

We encourage you to show up as your authentic self, including how you speak. If the occasional curse word is part of how you naturally express passion, humor, or emphasis, that’s totally fine. What matters most is respect. Language should uplift, not tear down. Avoid using strong language in a way that’s aggressive, harmful, or directed at others. Slurs and offensive language are never okay.TL;DR: Be yourself, speak freely, and keep respect at the heart of it all. 💙

    Community first means no self-promotion

This is a space for connection, learning, and shared growth. We encourage discussions, idea-sharing, and supporting each other’s journeys, but outright self-promotion, unsolicited sales pitches, or using the community primarily for personal gain isn’t in the spirit of what we’re building. Self-promotion is allowed only in certain circumstances, with prior approval.

    1. Share your insights and experiences, not just your products or services.

    2. If someone asks for recommendations and your work is a relevant fit, that’s great! Just be mindful of intent.

    3. If you’re unsure whether something is appropriate to share, ask a moderator first.

Our goal is to create a space where meaningful relationships can flower, not just basic networking transactions.

A place for experimentation and play

Learning and developing soft skills shouldn't feel like a performance. It should feel like an adventure!

    • You don’t have to be perfect here. This is a place to practice and try things out. But we do expect you to be curious, accountable, and open to feedback.

    • Mistakes are part of growth. We assume that others have good intentions. At the same time, we each take responsibility for the impact of our words and actions. Mistakes happen, and what matters is how we learn from them.

    • We explore, experiment, and play because that’s how we learn best.

We learn from and teach each other

No one has it all figured out, and that's the point!

    • Everyone here has something to offer, whether you’re new to soft skills, tech, corporate work or have years of experience.

    • We support each other because we want to, not because we expect something in return.

    • If you’ve learned something valuable, share it. If you need help, ask for it.

This is a collaborative space, not a competitive one. We grow better together.

    Constructive feedback and navigating conflict

Disagreements are part of learning! What matters is how we handle them:

    • Lead with kindness. If you have feedback, make it thoughtful and constructive.

    • No passive-aggressive side comments. Direct, honest conversations build trust.

    • If something feels off, talk about it. Conflict doesn’t have to be scary. It can be an opportunity for understanding and growth. You can reach out to the person directly or reach out to Lissy.

This community isn’t about “calling out” but calling in to help each other grow while keeping respect at the center.

We talk about systems, not partisan news

We believe that real-world challenges, like bias, privilege, and workplace inequalities, deserve thoughtful discussion. Tech is not neutral, and neither are the challenges professionals face in the workplace. Racism, sexism, ableism, and other oppressive structures exist, and we will talk about them. This space is for:

    • Discussing how social systems impact our work and well-being

    • Learning how to navigate bias and inequality in professional spaces

    • Acknowledging that workplace struggles (like sexism, racism, and ableism) aren’t just personal; they’re systemic

    • Taking responsibility for our own learning so we don’t expect others to do emotional labor for us

This is not a space for:

    • Conspiracy theories, political news debates, or divisive party-based arguments

    • Expecting marginalized people to educate others on demand

    • Discussions that derail into personal attacks rather than solutions

If you’re unsure whether a discussion fits, ask yourself:
“Is this about making work better, or is it just arguing about politics?”

Above all, this is a community that values human rights. If you can't get behind that, this community is not a good fit for you.

    What’s shared here, stays here

This is a space where people share their experiences, experiment with new skills, and open up about challenges. That requires trust and care.

    • Respect each other’s privacy. Stories shared here should stay here, unless you have explicit permission.

    • Share lessons, not names. If you want to talk about something you learned, do so in a way that protects others' privacy.

    Protecting our energy
